Copland, one of the top prolific and hailed American composers, begins this annual unique offering of jazz and classical orchestral music. The images of Appalachia dance off the stage with folk idioms and melodies, traditional American dance rhythms, and a combination of rich and brilliant orchestral hues. Following that, led by LCSO Jazz Director Ivan Arden, the orchestra is joined by gifted jazz artists to play well known standards from the authentic orchestral library of Charlie Parker. Well known American jazz saxophonist, composer, and band leader, Parker was nicknamed "The Bird" and was a highly influential soloist and leading figure in the development of bebop, a form of jazz characterized by fast tempos, virtuosic technique, and advanced harmonies.
