Choirmaster

Eric A. Johnson, D.M.A.

Eric A. Johnson, D.M.A. is the founding Artistic Director of Cor Cantiamo and Director of Choral Activities at Northern Illinois University (NIU). As a National Endowment for the Arts Artworks grant recipient, he has been recognized for his artistic leadership, whose ensembles represent “choral artistry at its finest.” (Lauridsen). He is a committed champion of contemporary choral music and dedicated to addressing social justice issues through interdisciplinary concert events. Johnson is the 2020 the Harold Decker Award recipient, awarded by the Illinois American Choral Director Association. This honor is given “in recognition of the significant contribution made to the lives of innumerable choral singers, conductors, and audiences who have been privileged to experience the finest in choral music as presented under his direction” (IL-ACDA). Ensembles under his direction have performed at multiple national and division conventions for the National Collegiate Choral Organization, American Choral Directors Association and the Music Educators National Conference. He has served as guest conductor for multiple national choral festivals at Avery Fisher Hall and the David Geffen Hall; Lincoln Center, New York. Internationally, Johnson is the Artistic Director of Festival of Three, an international choral festival that features commissioned works from hosting countries. In 2023, the festival was presented in Latvia, Estonia and Finland, and featured Estonian composer Pärt Uusberg. Johnson has served as a guest conductor of the Clare College Chapel Choir (Cambridge, England) and the Asian Pacific Activities Conference Choral Festival (Guangzhou, China); taught at Makumira University (Arusha, Tanzania); the Universidade do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte (Natal, Brazil); and directed guest choral residencies at Canterbury, Exeter and Worcester Cathedrals. As the Artistic Director of Cor Cantiamo, Johnson has recorded commercial CDs released on Centaur Records and the Divine Arts record labels. He has collaborated with many leading composers of our time including Dominick DiOrio, Stacey Gibbs, Libby Larsen, Morten Lauridsen, Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, Timothy C. Takach, Sir John Tavener, Pärt Uusberg, and James Whitbourn. Johnson has published music with Santa Barbara Music Publishing, served as a music editor for Earthsongs Publications and has published articles in the Choral Journal. He is active nationally as a clinician and guest conductor for high school and collegiate honor choirs and regularly conducts choral/orchestral masterworks works with both collegiate and professional ensembles.

Soprano Soloist

Nicole Besa

An established professional actor and chorister at notable companies including The Metropolitan Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and the Chicago Symphony Chorus, Nicole Besa is now garnering a distinguished and glittering signature as an Operatic and Symphonic new soprano solo voice, with recent role highlights including Mariana in Ilick’s Frida Kahlo and the Bravest Girl in the World, Jessie in Mazzoli’s The Listeners; Antigona in Handel’s Admeto; Lisette, Gabriella, and Bianca in Puccini’s La Rondine; and Annetta in the Ricci Brother’s Crispino e la Comare. Nicole’s soprano solo concert work includes Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate, and, of course Handel’s Messiah. Nicole is a winner of the Franc d’Ambrosio Talent Search, the Musician’s Club of Women Farwell Award, and has also won awards from the youngARTS Foundation, National Association of Teachers of Singing, and Classical Singer Competitions.

Alto Soloist

Molly Clementz

Molly Clementz made her professional debut with Pacific Opera Project in the LA Times’ acclaimed La Gazzetta as Doralice, where she “[reminded] one of Nancy Sinatra, with go-go boots and all” (Schmopera). Ms. Clementz was Opera Santa Barbara’s featured Mosher Studio Artist, performing Mercédès in Carmen, Lapák, and Datel in Janácek's The Cunning Little Vixen, and La Ciesca in Gianni Schicchi. A versatile zwischen singer and performer, she is hailed for her “wonderfully rich tone, gleaming top notes, and a vibrant lower register” (Opera Today). Now based in Chicago, Molly sings with the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company, recently playing Mad Margaret in their 2024 production of Ruddigore. She also loves performing new music by local composers, continuing to blend her passion for music and inclusive education in all her work. For more information, visit mollyclementz.com. Tenor Soloist

Jonathan Cramer

Jonathan Cramer holds a Bachelor’s of Music Education from the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music (Wheaton, Illinois) and a Master’s of Music in Choral Conducting from Simpson College (Indianola, Iowa). During his time at Wheaton, Jonathan performed as a soloist in Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Dixit Dominus, and as an understudy for Haydn’s Creation conducted by Maestro John Nelson. He also served as an honors conductor for the Wheaton College Concert Choir, organized and conducted a student performance of Schubert’s Mass in G Major, and was selected from over two hundred applicants to compete as one of nine semi-finalists in the National ACDA Undergraduate Conducting Competition. At Simpson College, Jonathan studied with Tim McMillin (Artistic Director and Conductor for the Des Moines Vocal Arts Ensemble), Phil Moody (co-founder of critically acclaimed professional men’s vocal ensemble, Cantus) and Matthew Oltman (Director Emeritus of Grammy-award-winning professional men’s vocal ensemble, Chanticleer), and conducted professional and collegiate singers in educational and concert environments. Jonathan previously taught choral music at Lake Zurich High School (Lake Zurich, Illinois) and Palombi Middle School (Lake Villa, Illinois) and currently teaches choir, drama, and general music at Millburn Middle School (Lindenhurst, Illinois). Since 2018, sixteen of his students have participated in regional and national honor choirs hosted by the American Choral Directors Association. Jonathan is a musical theater enthusiast, both as a performer and director. Jonathan is a talented and skilled vocalist. He regularly sings with the professional choir St. Charles Singers, based in St. Charles, Illinois and occasionally performs as a soloist. Jonathan’s previous appearance with the LCSO was in 2022 as the tenor soloist for part 1 of Handel’s Messiah. Jonathan is also an accomplished pianist, having experience in solo performance, accompanying local choirs, and accompanying students at solo and ensemble festivals. Jonathan has two sons, Rainen and Osher, and lives in Waukegan, Illinois.

Stephen Hobe

Switch-hitting in musical theatre and opera, baritone Stephen Hobe has flourished in classical and crossover repertoire in hometown Chicago. Mr. Hobe is “a generous performer,” lauded for his charismatic and often quirky performances of particularly English and Italian repertoire. Mr. Hobe is excited to have three seasons as a member of the Supplemental Chorus at the Lyric Opera of Chicago under his belt, where he has performed in Macbeth, Beethoven's 9th Symphony, Ernani, Don Carlos, Flying Dutchman and Aida. Mr. Hobe has been seen in recital halls and opera houses across the nation, including Madison Opera, Florentine Opera, St. Petersburg Opera, MIOpera, Kenosha Opera Festival, as well as many more houses closer to home in Chicago. Mr. Hobe studied paleontology and musical theatre at Carthage College (BA, 2015), as well as voice at Roosevelt University (MM, 2018).
